Enjoy learning Flute
Historically, flutes are evident in music of a multitude of cultures, and are very much a part of the human story. There is evidence going back some 45,000 years that early humans, on a migration route out of Africa into Europe, carried a small and significant object – an instrument carved from the bone of a griffon vulture. This early flute, with five carefully crafted finger holes, was capable of advanced music making.
With its soul-stirring, pure and poetic sound, artists of every epoch have drawn inspiration from the fascinating wealth of myths and legends woven around the flute. Its unique power however, comes from the fact that it is the living breath of the player that gives this beautiful instrument its voice – invoking it to resonate with sound. The flutist conjures into song the vital element of air – in fact the flute requires more air than any other instrument, including the tuba!
Our flute students are encouraged to explore the joy of playing solo, but there are also many opportunities to join our orchestras, chamber ensembles, and our concert and jazz bands. We also work towards attainment in classical training for those who wish to follow a graded pathway with their instrument.
