***** Songlines

ARSEN PETROYSAN

Arsen has recently emerged as one of his generation’s main proponents of the Armenian duduk. Following in the footsteps of established duduk masters such as Djivan Gasparian and his mentor Gevorg Dabaghyan, Petrosyan has managed to carve out his own pathway through diverse collaborations with Steve Hackett (Genesis), Emirati composer Ihab Darwish, oudist Ara Dinkjian, Omar Bashir among others. Between both of his ensembles, the A.G.A Trio and the Arsen Petrosyan Quartet, as well as solo, he has performed throughout Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and the Caucasus and toured extensively in North America as well.?

Born and raised in Charentsavan, Armenia, where he currently still resides, Petrosyan’s more immediate familial roots are from the ethnic Armenian enclave of Javakhk (in the Republic of Georgia) while his ancestral homeland is in Erzurum (now in modern-day Turkey). He received his Masters Degree in Music (Duduk concentration) at the Komitas Conservatory of Yerevan in 2016.

MEHDI ROSTAMI (Setar)

Mehdi Rostami was born in Kermanshah, Iran. Having started learning setar at the age of six, he pursued advanced studies with Ustad Mohammadreza Lotfi and took masterclasses with Hossein Alizadeh and Kayhan Kalhor. In 2010 Mehdi started his own collaborative projects in the UK, working with musicians from different cultures such as Maya Yousef, Tara Jaff and Gilad Atzmon.

Startling music with unexpected twists. The variety of sounds and textures that Mehdi creates with the tiny four-stringed setar is astonishing.

ADIB ROSTAMI (Kamancheh)

Adib Rostami has played and recorded with Mehdi for many years; integrating influences from Kurdish traditional music and from the Fars province. Rooted in ancient Iranian musical tradition, their pieces present a fresh, contemporary perspective, with the technical and creative powers of the two young musicians evident throughout their work. The Rostami cousins have arrived at such a level of mastery, that in each performance they open a luminous window to musical discovery to any new listener.

Classical Persian music of the highest order. Hauntingly beautiful with enormous charm, as well as often high energy, tension and excitement that are just breath-taking.
