About the programme
This concert features original solo piano compositions by Mirana Faiz, each inspired by dreams, journeys, and intimate reflections. Every piece tells a story, inviting listeners into a world of imagination, emotion, and cinematic textures.
Whispers of the Journey – Solo Piano – This three-part solo piano work begins with a young princess dreaming at her castle window, longing for the worlds beyond. Drawn by wonder and starlit imaginings, she runs to the station, breathless with hope, and boards a train that carries her through the Scottish landscapes. As the journey unfolds in blurs of colour and light, she composes a timeless piece, each note shaped by the whispers of the journey. The work is structured in three sections, anticipation, movement, and arrival. The opening captures the decision to leave and the emotional weight of departure; the middle section builds momentum, echoing the rhythmic motion of travel; and the closing offers a gentle arrival, a place transformed by the act of journeying. At its heart, the piece is about that quiet, magical space where possibility begins and the freedom of stepping into the unknown. HIM Awards Nominee & 68th Grammy Consideration (2026).
Perle de Mer – Inspired by a dream aboard a sailing ship off the South of France, this piece evokes the freedom and authenticity found when no one is watching. It explores emotions often hidden, like a pearl within a shell, and unfolds in three sections: the solitude of the open sea, the quiet release of inner emotions, and the transformative realisation of the value of all feelings. The final touches were completed in August 2023 during a stay at a small pink hotel in the South of France. The piece invites listeners to explore their own hidden depths and the beauty of authenticity and introspection.
Amber Nocturne – A gentle, two-part composition inspired by quiet walks at sunset. It evokes warmth, stillness, and calm, creating a space for reflection and grounding. The melodies flow slowly, like the fading glow of golden light, inviting the listener to pause, breathe, and experience tranquility. Unlike pieces of deep introspection or epic journeys, Amber Nocturne is a musical moment of peace and serene beauty.
The Spinning – This contemplative work reflects the cyclical nature of emotions and recurring patterns in life. Opening with a delicate, music-box-like theme, it revisits motifs in repetition, symbolising loops of feeling and reflection. The final section shifts toward acceptance and growth, suggesting the ability to coexist with recurring emotions. Ending on the highest C of the piano, the piece leaves a sense of continuity, resilience, and hope.
Lake Vyrnwy – Composed in 2017, this piece captures anticipation, self-reflection, and the contemplation of life’s choices. Inspired by approaching a lakeside, the rustling leaves, and dangling legs above water, it evokes moments of melancholy, longing, and introspection. The music explores “what if” scenarios, the paths taken and unchosen, and the quiet wonder of life’s possibilities. Gentle wind-like motifs and reflective passages give the listener a sense of walking, pondering, and quietly observing the world.
Le Réveil des Rêves (Morning Valse) & Valse Endormie (Evening Valse) – Two contrasting waltzes capturing a day in the Cotswold village of Bibury. Morning Valse is light, fresh, and joyful, reflecting the first steps into a new day and the gentle rhythm of village life awakening. Evening Valse offers a dreamlike atmosphere, with lantern-lit streets and the calm magic of nightfall, evoking nostalgia, wonder, and tranquility. Together, the two waltzes paint the arc of a day, from brightness to quiet reflection, weaving rhythm, charm, and cinematic imagery.
Concert-Exclusive Pieces:
Snow Globe – Delicate, sparkling, and winter-inspired, this piece evokes quiet magic, stillness, and moments of wonder. The gentle textures and subtle harmonies create a feeling of suspended time, like observing snowfall in a small glass globe.
Lost in Kyoto – Inspired by a vivid dream in which Mirana, despite knowing Kyoto well from previous visits, becomes lost on a snowy bridge. Amid the heavy snowfall, she discovers a concert hall and is guided to the stage by a mysterious lady. The music captures the tension of being lost in a familiar place, the calm guidance found in unexpected moments, and the joy of arrival. After composing the piece, Mirana had the opportunity to premiere it in Kyoto, performing before a local audience and receiving four curtain calls, leaving a lasting impression on both the performer and listeners.
Life of a Ghost – This composition tells the story of a ghost, showing that every spirit carries its own history, memories, and emotions. Mirana began writing it during a visit to East Dene Estate on the Isle of Wight for a filming project. The piece reflects he impressions of the estate and the subtle, haunting presence she sensed there. Through delicate melodies and ethereal harmonies, it explores the lingering traces of a life once lived and the quiet persistence of memory. The composition remains unfinished, leaving space for further development and reflection. Each composition blends cinematic textures, lyrical melodies, and personal narrative, taking the listener on a journey through imagination, emotion, and the subtle magic of everyday and dreamlike experiences.
