Jazz in The Gardens: Yolanda Charles' Project PH Album Launch

When a globally recognised, multifaceted talent like Yolanda Charles MBE, the renowned bassist and composer whose career spans collaborations with BB King to Hans Zimmer—announces a new album by Project PH, it marks a significant moment.

 An essential on-record debut for a major new contributor to Britain’s contemporary jazz scene.

In the group and across this new collection, Charles’ main protagonist is producer and guitarist Nick Linnik. Known for his blazing guitar playing, his intricate arrangements, programming and sound-design have shaped the album. Highly skilled Keyboardist Hamish Balfour, whose innovative work has earned him acclaim in jazz and electronic circles has added the final touches to the high-performance quality of the finished record.

Charles & Linnik working together since July 2022 during their long-running Ronnie Scott’s residency, have forged a unique and compelling fusion of genres, set to redefine musical boundaries. The new parameters are evident from the opener, NO ID, which draws inspiration from various influences, blending elements of ’80s jazz fusion and ’70s funk with a tight, dynamic progressive flair. The vocals of Paris Ruel and Adeola Shyllon further emphasize the soulful, funky essence of Yolanda’s remarkably diverse musical spectrum.

Each track on Acid Funk features its own distinct character, at its core is a bold fusion of ideas, sounds and lyrics which come together to create an immersive experience – brought to the table by the guest performers and honed by the core of Charles, Linnik and Balfour into a collection that feels both cohesive and refreshingly individual.
