Grammy award-winning vocalist and composer Luciana Souza and Trio Corrente unite to present Cometa, a new recording highlighting the pleasures of community, music making, and the Brazilian songbook. As a group, they celebrate the reemergence of hope in Brazil with a collection of inspiring music highlighting the power of Brazilian song and the limitless expression of jazz.

Luciana Souza has been a fan of the outstanding Grammy award-winning São Paulo based piano group, Trio Corrente, since their inception. She had initially met the Trio’s drummer, Edu Ribeiro, while teaching but was reintroduced while they recorded an album with German trumpeter, Till Brönner. Pianist Fabio Torres was also on the Brönner recording and was well known as a member of guitarist Chico Pinheiro’s different ensembles, while bassist Paulo Paulelli was familiar for his work with the great Rosa Passos.

Recorded live in São Paulo, Cometa features sambas by Dorival Caymmi, Ari Barroso, Jobim, Paulinho da Viola, Djavan, plus four originals, one by each musician. When asked about the music, Luciana and Trio Corrente expressed that joy was the permeating feeling on the sessions and the music. Inspired by the Zimbo Trio sessions with Elis Regina, this meeting of four of the most extraordinary Brazilian jazz musicians combines that undeniable Brazilian swing and heart, with abundant virtuosity and talent.

Luciana Souza is a Grammy Award winner and one of jazz’s leading singers and interpreters. As a leader, Souza has been releasing acclaimed recordings since 2002, including her six Grammy – nominated records Brazilian Duos, North and South, Duos II, Tide, Duos III, and The Book of Chet.

Trio Corrente is comprised of Fabio Torres, Paulo Paulelli, and Edu Ribeiro. Having performed together over the last twenty years with a Who is Who of Brazilian artists, and massing a loyal following in Brazil and Europe, Trio Corrente is the group of choice for musicians such as Paquito de Rivera, Rosa Passos, and Ron Carter, who confessed being “deeply impressed by the quality and maturity of the Trio. “ With Paquito, Trio Corrente won two Grammys and toured the world.
