Carrying the Flame, presented by World Heart Beat, celebrates Windrush Day 2026—a nationwide movement to honour the lasting contributions and cultural legacy of migrants who helped shape post-war Britain, with particular recognition of the African-Caribbean passengers who arrived aboard the HMT Empire Windrush in 1948, now known as the Windrush generation.
At its core, World Heart Beat is dedicated to connecting cultures and generations through music—championing global diversity, elevating exceptional artists, and using creativity as a force for unity and human connection.
Carrying the Flame builds on this vision, expanding a creative programme developed in collaboration with members of the Windrush community. The concert reflects the rich cultural fabric of Wandsworth, celebrating a vibrant mix of voices and perspectives to ensure creativity continues to flourish across communities.
The programme is curated by Ava Joseph and Ayo Vincent, and will include influence from the genres of Reggae, Ska, Calypso, and Jazz.
Ava Joseph is celebrated for her genre-blending artistry and distinctive voice, weaving together jazz, soul, R&B, and conscious lyricism.
Ayo Vincent a pianist, arranger, and composer and leads World Heart Beat’s young musician ensembles. Rooted in jazz, his work is defined by expressive improvisation, nuanced interpretation, and a deep commitment to musical storytelling.
Please note that members of the Windrush generation can request a code to receive a free ticket.
