Double-bill: solo piano original compositions, Coltrane pieces and standards. Second set from South-East London group dedicated to exploring and performing the music of South African jazz legend Bheki Mseleku
Daniel Piers is a British-Spanish jazz pianist based in London. He taught himself jazz piano in his late teenage years after falling in love with the music of Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson. Having established firm roots in the swing tradition, he began to experiment with more contemporary sounds – absorbing the music of John Taylor, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Shai Maestro.
Under the guidance of renowned British pianist Julian Joseph, Daniel has been cultivating a deep rhythmic approach and melodic sensibility to improvised music. He was one of the few selected to compete in the 15th Unisa International Jazz Piano Competition which will take place in January 2024 in Pretoria, South Africa.
Tonight he will be performing a solo piano set of original compositions, John Coltrane pieces and standards.
The second set will feature a performance from The Art of Bheki Mseleku Quintet + special guest Gareth Lockrane.
‘The Art of Bheki Mseleku Quintet’ is a South-East London group dedicated to exploring and performing the music of South African jazz legend Bheki Mseleku.
Bheki Mseleku was a South African musician who combined elements of the American bebop tradition, African township music and his own devout spirituality to emerge as a leading jazz pianist of his generation. After migrating to London due to the oppressive apartheid culture in South Africa, Bheki became a core player in the London jazz scene and his legacy can still be felt to this day.
Led by Cameron Scott on euphonium/trombone, The Art of Bheki Mseleku Quintet features Matt Seddon on trombone, Kobe Heath-Ngugi on double bass, Seb Bloom on drums, Danny Piers on piano and special guest legendary British jazz musician Gareth Lockrane on flute.
This group has already enjoyed performances at various venues in London, such as MAP Studio Cafe, and seeks to continue to share the beautiful music of Bheki Mseleku with live audiences.
