Jonathan Gee
Jonathan Gee began taking classical piano lessons from the age of six and clarinet lessons from nine. This then developed into his love of improvising, and then an introduction to Jimi Hendrix led to him to guitar and singing from the age of twelve.
Whilst studying medieval history at University Jonathan developed a love of jazz and this was the beginning of him becoming a professional jazz pianist, whilst still keeping his love of Bach and Stravinsky going. Jonathan spent a couple of years being musical director for shows at the Edinburgh Festival and writing songs for TV and radio before committing to being a full time jazz pianist, and more recently singer.
Since then he has played all over the world leading and composing for his trio and performing with many of the legends of jazz such as Art Farmer, Benny Golson, Pharoah Sanders, Joe Lovano, Mark Murphy and Nasheet Waits. He has featured on over forty albums including eleven of his own.
He has worked extensively with World Heart beat tutors Tony Kofi, Byron Wallen and Julian Fenton. He has taught piano for many years both privately and leading masterclasses/workshops in the UK, USA and Europe, including at conservatoires in Torino, Messina, as well as in the USA and at the University of Oxford.
Jonathan is a regular guest tutor at Julian Joseph’s Jazz Academy.
