Now in its second year, First Beats is an innovative music partnership between World Heart Beat and local primary schools in the Battersea area. The programme helps to break down barriers to participating in arts/music activity and performance and introduces young students to music on a weekly basis.
Instruments taster sessions include violin, singing, flute, clarinet, drums, songwriting and recording in our brand new studio. Our First Beat Music Programe students have also attended a concert by professional musicians hosted at our World Heart Beat Embassy Gardens concert hall. For many of the children who live in the residential estates in Queenstown ward, Nine Elms, it was their first experience of live music.
‘This is such an amazing opportunity for students. To be able to try all these instruments and to work with professional musicians, is just incredible!’ – St Mary’s RC Primary School
With huge thanks
We are hugely thankful for the generous support of The Helen Hamlyn Trust and The Portal Trust who are funding the First Beats Music Programme and enabling us to welcome children from Griffin Primary School, Herbert Morrison Primary School, St George’s Primary School, and St Mary’s RC Primary School this year.
Some of the children involved in First Beats will also have the opportunity to access our bursary support to continue learning an instrument with us for up to one year.
We hope that through this programme many of the children will become regular students at World Heart Beat over time.
