Sea Island & Ferry UK Tour - Where Words Fail
Friday 23 August 2024
Contemporary Classical
Tickets: £25
Neo-chamber ensemble from Hong Kong musically recounts stories of migration, bereavement and climate crisis through original compositions.
Acclaimed Hong Kong neo-chamber ensemble Sea Island & Ferry make their London debut as part of a short tour taking in Manchester and Edinburgh.
Sea Island & Ferry highlights the “language-free” aspect of its music and in this tour, takes its title from a quote by Hans Christian Andersen: ‘Where words fail, music speaks.’
The four-piece instrumental group have previously performed at major festivals and venues in Hong Kong and Japan, as well as in Taiwan and Macau, receiving widespread acclaim from audiences and critics. After a long touring break due to COVID-19, the ensemble is ambitious to reach an audience beyond Asia for the first time.
Formed in 2016, Sea Island & Ferry is the only group in Hong Kong to create instrumental music that gathers a niche but fervent following. The ensemble won recognition as the Best Band/Group of the Year in the Hong Kong Music Critics Choice in 2022.
A balanced ensemble of strings, piano, and clarinet makes up Sea Island & Ferry. Each instrumental tone complements the next perfectly, and harmony, as it were, is a central theme. Listening to these works feels like putting together a puzzle– the satisfaction of pieces coming together just right.
