Emily Sun & Joseph Havlat

Two striking musicians combine forces to perform this exciting program of violin and piano duo works

Thursday 20 March 2025

Classical

Tickets: £22.50 / £16*

Emily Sun and Joseph Havlat combine forces to perform this exciting program of violin and piano duo works. The emotionally turbulent Szyamanowski Violin Sonata showcases the late-Romanticism in his early writing, and Stravinsky’s Divertimento from the ballet Le baiser de la fée showcase virtuosity from both instruments. Rounded out by a collection of pieces by Czech composer and violinist Josef Suk, each movement with its own individuality and charm.

Biographies

Emily Sun

Possessed of a superb talent” (The Australian), with “a searing and poetic tone” (The Guardian), “the flight’s of Emily Sun’s violin … reaches heavenwards … leaving us all in a long, stunned silence” (The Independent).

Emily Sun’s powerful sound and compelling, captivating interpretations have won her international renown, just as her genuine connection with audiences and engaging presence have thrilled her growing host of supporters.

As much a chamber musician as a virtuoso, Emily originally shot to fame as a young violin soloist and media star in Australia, and internationally as a multi prize-winner. Now based in London and having performed with significant orchestras and in major concert halls around the globe, she is a fast-rising star with “a perfect balance of expressivity and formidable strength” (The Australian).

She has recently performed with the Sydney Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, BBC National Orchestra of Wales with conductors Mark Wigglesworth, Gemma New, Jaime Martin, and as the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Artist-in-Association with Andrew Litton and Benjamin Northey.

Emily’s debut ARIA-nominated solo album, Nocturnes’, was release on ABC Classic to critical acclaim, reaching No. 1 on the ARIA Classical Charts, and her second release ‘Film Fantasia’ features the Korngold violin concerto and the world premiere of Elena Kats-Chernin violin concerto. Emily is violin professor at the Royal College of Music and performs on a 1753 G.B. Guadaganini, kindly loaned by the UKARIA Cultural Trust.

Joseph Havlat

Joseph is an Australian pianist and composer from Hobart, who is based in London. He works frequently as a soloist, having given recitals at Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and King’s Place, and also chamber musician, having performed with artists such as James Ehnes and Steven Isserlis.

He has released CDs on the LSO Live label (the premiere recording of John Adams ’two-piano work ‘Roll Over Beethoven’), Métier (music by Michael Finnissy) and Delphian Records (Schubert violin and piano works) amongst others. Passionate about modern and contemporary music, he has collaborated with such composers as Thomas Adès, Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Gerald Barry and Hans Abrahamsen. As a composer, his music often explores the sounds of the natural world, imbued with the harsher shapes of human modernity. He has written music spanning from solo voice to large ensemble, including for his own Ensemble x.y, of which he was a founding member. He grows ferns.
