Smt Saraswathy Kugathas is a well-renowned exponent of the Carnatic Instrumental Music, Veena, in the UK.

She had her initial tutelage under Sangeetha Bhushanam Smt Kamala Krishnamoorthy Iyer in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. With her passion for Carnatic Music Vocal and Veena, she undertook advanced training in India.

During her training she dedicated learning the complex and intricate techniques of Veena playing as well as engaging with theoretical aspects and obtained the title as “Sangeetha Vidwan” from completing Diploma in veena with a Distinction and Diploma in Music teaching from the prestigious Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University, Chennai. Through that period, she was taught by highly renowned Veena lecturers: the late Professor Saratha Sivanantham, the late Professor Rajaluxmi Narayanan and Professor Kalyani Ganesan. Smt Saraswathy Kugathas’s dedication and proficiency enabled her to receive advanced training under Veena maestros such as: the late Dr Chittibabu and late professor Thanjavur Sivanandampillai (the 7th generation representative of the Thanjavur Quartet). It was indeed her blessing to be surrounded in a divine atmosphere of music and this motivated her to master the intricate techniques of playing the Veena from the famous Veena Artists. Furthermore, she completed an advanced Vocal training under Sangeetha Kalanidhi Smt R. Vedavalli and Sangeetha Kalanidhi B Rajam Iyer at the Chennai Music Academy.

Afterwards Smt Saraswathy Kugathas moved to the UK to continue her music journey and started to pass on her skills. She has trained innumerable students over the past twenty-five years and has been a proud examiner in the Academy of Fine Arts directed by Dr Nithyanadhan and founded by the late Sri Saraswathy Packiarasa (chief examiner). Her passion to enlighten the knowledge of this divine instrument to the next generation has made her a devoted and a dedicated teacher who preservers until the students perform to the best of their abilities.
