The 51st State Band is one of the largest youth concert bands in London, providing big opportunities for well over 100 musicians between 7 and 18 years old, in and around the London Borough of Wandsworth.

The band was inspired by the American Band Method, where young musicians only need to be able to play a few notes on their instruments in order to join. We’ve proved over several years, that playing in a band is the best way for children and young musicians to make fast progress. The music we play is fun, exciting, and often challenging. Our players have to work hard, but we think the results are worth it!

The 51st State Band provides the opportunity for children and young people regardless of their background, to use a range of artistic media to help them deal with challenges in their lives and to develop their confidence and key skills necessary to enable them to engage with their peers and succeed in their personal goals. In particular, the 51st State Band projects.

The 51st State Band can provide instruments for children who want to learn and offers tuition on the following instruments:

  • Trombone
  • French Horn
  • Trumpet
  • Saxophone
  • Clarinet
  • Flute
  • Percussion
  • Bass Guitar

The band also provides opportunities for parents, gap year students, volunteers, mentors, Duke of Edinburgh award scheme volunteering and university students to participate.
